Burgers are a beloved classic across the whole world. Among the various burger cooking techniques, the smashed burger method has gained significant popularity for its ability to create a perfectly crispy, flavorful patty. In this essay, we will dive into the step-by-step process of crafting a mouthwatering smashed burger, exploring the ingredients, equipment, and techniques required to achieve burger perfection. To begin your journey towards a delectable smashed burger, start by choosing quality ingredients that will enhance the flavor profile of your creation. Here are the key components in the following steps.

Opt for ground beef with higher fat content, around 80% lean and 20% fat. The fat adds juiciness and richness to the patty, contributing to its mouthwatering texture and flavor. More fat makes the burger fall apart and less fat makes it dry. Keep the seasoning simple to allow the natural flavors of the beef to shine. Use salt, pepper, and any other desired seasonings like garlic powder or onion powder to enhance the taste. Divide the ground beef into equal portions, typically around 100-150 grams each. Gently shape each portion into a loose ball, being careful not to overwork the meat as it may result in a dense patty.

The cooking process for a smashed burger involves a specific technique that creates the delicious caramelized crust, which is what you desire unless you’re at a fast food restaurant. Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until it’s sizzling hot. This ensures the wanted crust and colour. The trick is to skip the oil in the pan since the burger already contains fat, this will make sure it doesn’t stick but still gets the iconic crust.

Place a portioned patty onto the hot cooking surface and immediately smash it down using a spatula or a dedicated burger press, or as a broke student, I use a small saucepan with baking paper between so the burger doesn’t stick. Apply firm pressure to flatten the patty to about half a centimeter thickness. This smashing technique creates maximum surface contact with the cooking surface, resulting in a crispy layor. Allow the patty to cook undisturbed for about 2-3 minutes, allowing the bottom to develop a flavorful crust. Flip the patty using a spatula and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes for medium-rare to medium doneness. You can of course cook it all the way through, but then it might end up dry.

Now that the patty is perfectly cooked, it’s time to assemble the ultimate smashed burger. Choose soft, slightly toasted buns that can hold up to the juicy patty and toppings without falling apart. Classic sesame seed buns are a popular choice or the famous brioche. Depending on the season of the year and what you prefer, apart from the regular ones, you can have a variety of toppings such as chili mayo, roasted garlic, caramelized onion, pickled red onion, avocado, jalapeño, and fried onion rings. Be creative and select toppings that complement your personal preferences, there is nothing wrong with the world-wide known classic cheeseburger.

Mastering the art of the smashed burger involves the careful selection of ingredients, precise cooking techniques, and the freedom to customize to one’s preference. The result is a mouthwatering delight that enhances the taste buds with its crispy exterior, juicy interior, and perfect balance of flavors and textures, which almost unites the whole world.
