April is almost over, and after Valborg, the more reliable weather of May will arrive. For many people, warmer weather is the highlight of the year and the start of a new chapter. The days get longer, and new opportunities for enjoying a Swedish summer emerge. As I’ve compiled insights and crafted a guide on how to seize the essence of summer 2024, let’s explore the possibilities together. From soaking in the sun to exploring outdoor festivals, there’s a wealth of adventures waiting to be embraced. So, as the days grow warmer and longer, let’s set forth on a journey to maximize the joy of this summer.

Parks

First and foremost, the longer days and warmer temperatures mean it’s the perfect time to explore the outdoors. If you are staying in Lund, you will be surrounded by beautiful nature and parks, such as Stadsparken and Lund Botanical Gardens, which offer endless opportunities for picnicking, reading, playing board games, or simply soaking up the sun.

Festivals

Additionally, summer in Sweden means the return of outdoor events and festivals. From music concerts to food festivals to cultural celebrations, there’s always something happening to keep you entertained.

Here is a list of music festivals held in Sweden in summer 2024:

  • Brännbollsyran (Umeå) May 31st – 1st of June
  • Sweden Rock (Sölvesborg) 5th-8th of June
  • Summer On (Båstad) 14th-15th of June

  • Way Out West (Gothenburg) 8th-10th of August

Here is a list of food festivals held in Sweden in summer 2024:

  • Skåne Matfestival (Kristianstad) 1st of June
  • Smaka på Stockholm (Stockholm) 5th-9th of June
  • Asia Street Food Festival (Stockholm) 28th-29th of June
  • Drinkmässan (Gothenburg) 24th-25th of May
  • Street Food-festivalen:

– (Stockholm) 26th-27th of April

– (Malmö) 28th-29th of June

– (Gothenburg) 29th of August-1st of September

Sports and activities

Also, let’s not forget about the chance to indulge in some summer sports and activities. Whether it’s playing beach volleyball at Ulrikedal, Delphi, or Lomma, or going for a bike ride through the countryside, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Some other activities you could try are to grab some friends and watch an Allsvenskan soccer game, to try surfing in Varberg, Österlen, or Torö, or to play Spikeball in your garden. You can also challenge yourself by camping and hiking in the wild. With endless possibilities awaiting, the summer is yours to explore and embrace every thrilling adventure that comes your way.

Find a new hobby

For some, summer brings with it the gift of extra time, presenting a wonderful chance to explore new hobbies. Personally, I’ve recently discovered a passion for crocheting and pottery. If you’re seeking a relaxing hobby, you might delve into the world of crossword puzzles or sudoku, engaging your mind while enjoying moments of peaceful contemplation. But why stop there? You could also explore hobbies like gardening, photography, reading, writing, yoga, meditation, cooking, or baking.

Indoor activities

Regarding the Swedish weather, the sun is not always shining, and there should also be room for some indoor activities. Why not take advantage of the many cafes in Sweden? “Kaffeeklatsch” is a fantastic new word I recently learned. It is German and means you have coffee and gossip together with friends. Take the opportunity to appreciate a fika with good company or enjoy some people-watching while savoring a delicious Swedish pastry. Other indoor activities that are always winning concepts are visiting a museum or seeing a movie at the cinema. Here is a list of movies premiering in summer 2024:

  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
  • Sommartider – filmen om Gyllene Tider
  • It Ends with Us
  • Alien: Romulus
  • Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
  • The Fall Guy
  • Arthur the King
  • Hit Man
  • Bad Boys 4
  • Deadpool 3
  • Beetlejuice 2

With that said, maybe this is your year to make a summer bucket list and challenge yourself to try new things, or maybe you need a summer to relax and have a couple of Kaffeeklatsches? But perhaps the greatest benefit of summer in Sweden is the sense of community it brings. With Swedish people collectively choosing to wear summer clothes and bikinis even though it is 16 degrees, there’s a visible energy and eagerness to make the most of the season. Be sure to embrace all that summer in Sweden has to offer and make some unforgettable memories along the way.
